John Volken opened a second-hand furniture store. That small beginning grew into United Furniture Warehouse, a major North American retail business with more than 150 locations.
A Purpose Beyond Business
Having achieved success in business, John turned toward a lifelong desire to help others. Conversations with community advocates revealed a need for long-term residential programs that combined personal development with practical life skills and job training.

John visited and studied residential programs in the United States and Europe. These experiences helped shape his vision for a community where people could rebuild their lives through structure, responsibility, and meaningful opportunities to learn.

The Academy’s Beginnings
The program began under the name Welcome Home, laying the foundation for what would become John Volken Academy. Its purpose was to help people develop the life skills, work habits, and personal responsibility needed to become self-sufficient.

A New Chapter Begins
John sold United Furniture Warehouse and devoted himself full time to the John Volken Foundation’s charitable work. The sale marked his transition from building a retail business to building opportunities for others.
Turning Success into Opportunity
John placed the proceeds from the sale into his foundation, committing the success of his business to a lasting charitable purpose. Those resources supported John Volken Academy and other initiatives helping people in need.
Carrying the Purpose Forward
John Volken Academy continues John’s vision: giving people the opportunity to rebuild their lives and become self-sufficient, contributing members of society. Through a supportive community, personal accountability, education, and hands-on vocational training, students build the skills and confidence to create a stable future. Every student who moves forward carries that purpose into their family, workplace, and community.
