How a Mountain Bike Event Brought Community and Opportunity to JVA Students

On the morning of December 13th, the parking lot at Action Rideshop began to fill with bikes and familiar faces. There was a shared sense of excitement as people from the community took time out of their busy lives to come together. What brought everyone out was a simple but meaningful purpose: a day centered on generosity, connection, and second chances in support of the John Volken Academy.

From the Bike Shop to the John Volken Academy

Led by Brad White and his community group Life Behind Bars, Some JVA students and the riders headed out together toward Hawes Trail. The goal of the day was clear. The event raised funds for seven full suspension mountain bikes and gear for JVA students. These bikes give students a healthy outlet and a chance to build confidence. Out on the trail, everyone rode together. Students, experienced riders, and first time riders encouraged one another. The shared effort brought people closer.

Community Connection

After a full morning on the trail, the group returned to Action Rideshop for a BBQ. Support from Dixxon Flannel and generous donors like Danny helped make the day possible. The real impact was found in the time spent together. Conversations were easy. Laughter filled the space. For many students, the day served as a reminder that they are supported by a larger community that believes in their future.

The Bikes Arrive and the Goal Becomes Real

Just a week later, the goal became reality. Brad, along with Josh and Tyler from Action Rideshop, delivered the new bikes and gear. What began as an idea on the trail was now a row of full suspension mountain bikes ready to be used. The bikes will be officially presented to the Academy for Christmas day. The holiday will now also celebrate growth and hope. Read more about student life at John Volken Academy.

 Building Something That Lasts

The impact did not stop with the delivery. JVA students are currently building a dedicated bike shed to store and care for the bikes. This project builds responsibility, teamwork, and pride. A New Year group ride is also being planned. It will be the students first official ride on the new bikes and another milestone in their recovery journey. Learn how you can support JVA students.
